Those Who Forget the Past are Doomed to Eat It

A restaurant , "Hitler's Cross," in an urban financial district in India decides to go with a Nazi theme, complete with a big, stern picture of Hitler in the door.

"We are not promoting Hitler," insists the owner, despite the evidence to the contrary. "But we want to tell people we are different in the way he was different."

All together now: YECCCH!

The Indians obviously have learned the American art of "spin"!

I read in the paper today that after all the apparently unexpected outcry the owners have changed the name to just "The Cross Restaurant" and will be changing the decor to remove Nazi references. No word yet on whether they will now be covered in crucifixes or whether the new name merely represents their attitude.

Dear Danny,

It's one thing for an Indian to retain the swastika but to repudiate the Nazi connotations, since the Nazis essentially stole and misused it. It's something else for an Indian to repudiate the traditional meanings of the swastika in India and embrace its Nazi encrustations. That takes special kind of stupidity.

Yours truly,
Rick
